OUR HISTORY
Wasatch Pony Club has played a major role in developing and preserving eventing in Northern Utah for over 40 years. In 1973, the City of Ogden received land from the federal government designated for public recreation, and Wasatch Pony Club was approached about developing a cross-country course on the property.
That vision became reality in 1987 with the first running of the Golden Spike Horse Trials, which was immediately recognized as the Best New Combined Training Event in the United States. Since then, the Golden Spike Event Center and its cross-country course have hosted USEA recognized and unrecognized competitions, lessons, clinics, and educational opportunities for riders across the region.
Because the course sits on public land, Wasatch Pony Club has continually worked to preserve and maintain it for equestrian use. Over the years, generations of Pony Club members, families, volunteers, and sponsors have invested thousands of hours into improving footing, repairing and building jumps, controlling weeds, and maintaining the grounds.
In recognition of these efforts, Wasatch Pony Club received the United States Pony Club Brookfield Conservation Award in 2015 for its dedication to preserving non-motorized equestrian open space. Additional support from private donors, Weber County, and the Weber County RAMP Grant program has helped fund major improvements to the facility, including extensive renovations to the cross-country water complexes.
Today, Golden Spike continues to attract riders from across the Mountain West each spring and remains one of the premier eventing venues in the region. Operated by passionate volunteers and supported by the local equestrian community, the facility exists to provide educational and competitive opportunities for riders of all levels while preserving the sport of eventing for future generations.
